The Handheld Revolution
In every household, in every pocket, everywhere you turn there is a mobile device. 67% of the world now views the web from a mobile/handheld device (scary isn’t it), Google have predicted that mobile web search results will overtake desktop results this by the end of 2014. We at Motivo have been asking ourselves many questions about how this can affect ones online presence.
How will this affect SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)?
We have spent weeks trolling through Google using all kinds of mobile, table, and desktop platforms to see how the using the same search terms on each device can affect the results shown by search engines.
From this we can see that websites that are responsive, or have a branched off handheld website/web app seem to overtake other websites that didn’t react or view well on mobile and tablet viewports, oddly websites that had CSS3 media queries for a responsive look seemed to rank higher.
“It’s already begun”
Google has already started to single out websites that don’t have a mobile, or responsive website design.
Do you have a mobile website? Is this affecting you?
What’s the best practice? How can we change our website?
After doing a lot of research on our website traffic and looking at what devices accessed it the most, we was able to lay down our plan of action. How we were going to conquer the ‘Handheld Revolution’?
We noticed from our traffic that most of our visitors was using Apple devices and using different browsers (Safari, Chrome), so we sat down and put all our eggs in one basket and look for the most cost effective and SEO friendly option for our website.
We looked at the pros and cons of using responsive CSS3 Media Queries , and independent web app.
After a lot of pacing around the office, and a lot of repetition of ‘put the kettle on Ash’ we finally reached a decision… ‘Let’s go responsive.
We had to choose this option; it was the only logical conclusion, as SEO’s we looked at the benefits of keeping the whole website just on the one link rather than having the task of rebuilding a whole new web app and having to build our online presence from the bottom up, and this way we could work on the pre-existing search ranking we already had.
Did It Work?
It’s safe to say it did, we had accomplished what we thought was going to take forever, however within 3 weeks of releasing the working version of our beautiful responsive Motivo Media website we was right there on page 1 of Google for all of our targeted search terms.
You don’t have to rebuild your website form the ground up just to get to the top of search engines, you can simply work with what you have. Make sure you page content is descriptive and keyword rich, make sure you repeat those keywords in you meta title and description, and never forget to network. There is no such thing as impossible when you’re online, everything it possible it just takes patience.
